Samosa / Papri Chaat

A staple during the holidays or for weddings. This simple but filling chickpea salad is EVERYTHING! An added, stuffed potato, flaky pastry on top and your mind will be blown.

A popular street snack in South Asia but can easily be a meal it’s so filling. It hits all the taste buds of sweet, tangy, sour, spicy to leave you refreshed and so satisfied. Definitely hard to stop after one bite. So here’s my take on the ever popular Samosa Chaat.

Ingredients:

Serves 6 to 8

Chickpeas:

  • 1.5 cups or 1 can Garbanzo Beans (boiled, drained & rinsed)

  • 1/2 Onion (chopped)

  • 1 med Tomato (deseeded & chopped)

  • Handful Cilantro (chopped)

  • 2 Garlic Cloves (mashed)

  • 3 Tbsp Tamarind Chutney (recipe here)

  • 2 heaped Tbsp Plain Yogurt

  • 1 tsp Chaat Masala

  • 1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes

  • 1/2 Lemon (juiced)

  • Salt/Pepper (to taste)

  • 1 Serrano Pepper (chopped, optional)

Garnishes:

  • Tamarind Chutney (recipe here)

  • Avocado Cilantro Chutney (recipe here)

  • Sweet Yogurt Sauce (recipe here)

  • 1 Tomato (deseeded & chopped)

  • 1 Onion (chopped)

  • 1/4 Bunch Cilantro (chopped)

  • 1/4 Bunch Mint (chopped)

  • 1 tsp Chaat Masala

6 Aloo Samosas (recipe found here) or Papri of choice

Method:

  1. Mix all the ingredients for the chickpeas in a bowl.

  2. Taste to adjust and refrigerate covered for at least 2 hours or overnight to marinate.

  3. Before serving, place your marinated chickpea mixture onto a flat platter or plate.

  4. Drizzle with sweet yogurt, tamarind chutney, and avocado cilantro chutney.

  5. Top with chaat masala, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and mint.

  6. Now nuzzle in your cooked baked or fried samosas or papri and enjoy!

Notes:

  • Don’t want to add samosas? No problem, just add 1 peeled, cubed, boiled potato for a gluten free alternative or fried tortilla/Papri of choice.

  • Chaat Masala can be bought at any Indo/Pak grocery store or online.

  • You may omit or use dairy free yogurt to make this vegan.

  • Top with Chevra or spiced potato stick chips if desired.

  • Make ahead for a party and add the samosas right before serving.

  • Gluten free & Vegan Friendly (if you make some subs)
